Prepress PDF Print

There are several ways to supply your thesisfiles to the printer (printing office). You would get the lowest costs at a complete print-ready supply of both text and cover. This way you only pay the printing costs, and avoids the cost of prepress.

1. Printready, as a digital file

Printready means in most cases: a PDF file. Consult your printer how to generate a PDF suitable for print. Experience shows that not every pdf-generator produces a printable file.
Datawyse clients can check out the website for several articles that can help you to supply your printready files!

2. Not yet printready, as a digital file

If you don't have the time or ability to get the manuscript ready for printing, you can always rely on the expertise of Datawyse. The text can be supplied as MSWord file. However this involves additional time and costs, depending on wether you just want to get the file printready or if you also want the lay-out done. Are you interested? Please contact us in advance regarding the method of supplying.

TIP

Work from the beginning towards the final layout, and don't wait until the approval of the committee is aquired.

Look at what others have done. Its no shame to copy a style that you like.
Do not wait until the last minute if you want advice on technical matters or layout.

TIP

Prior consultation with your printer as to what 'print ready' means avoids unpleasant surprises later. A wordprocessor is not a DTP package.
- With a modern wordprocessor, such as MSword you cán make books, but there are clear limitations.
- our advice: accept the limitations you encounter and work around it.
- a wordeditor is made for typing and editing text ="easy to learn"
- a layout programme, such as indesign, is made to add layout = "difficult to learn"

Style Feature

MSWord, like virtually all other word processors have the so-called 'style function'. This is a feature whereby groups of certain lay-outcodes are put together, and this combination of codes can be activated with a single command. This feature comes in handy when we have a whole book to layout. "(Ie the application of design codes). In the hierarchy of headings, each level has specific text features and white margins. A heading at level 1, for example, can be bold with 2 blank lines above and below a blank line.

a) changes applied afterwards
A very important aspect of this way of working is the ability to change the entire book with the press of a button . If all the chapterheadings are applied with a style, than it is possible to change the style to adjust the appearance of all headings.

b) the closed style
Closed styles are similar to the usual text attributes such as bold and underlined. Before the text on which this code applies there is an "on" code and behind the text an "off" code. Only the text between the on and off code get's the style.

c) the open style
Open styles are used for design which comes back each chapter. An open style is used to replace the complete set of initialization codes at the beginning of a document by a single code.
